Orlando, FL –
“Remember you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength.”
These are the words of wisdom that Darius Richardson receives from his father every morning before they part ways for the day.
Darius, a 6 foot 1, 170-pound senior cornerback for the Orlando Christian Warriors makes the hour-long commute to school every morning, but the lengthy drive gives him plenty of time to realign his vision and keep his mind on the most important element of his life – his faith.
“I wake up at 5 o’clock every morning just to drive an hour north to our school. I’ve been doing this for years now. Me going to school, going to practice with a smile on my face – that’s something I have to do.”
As a sophomore and junior, Richardson did not receive much playing time. He rotated out on special teams and as a wide receiver on offense, but heading into his senior year, his coaches’ vision shifted, and they moved the versatile athlete to the defensive secondary where he instantly became the leader on the field.
“That was a role that I had to step up and fill. Players either graduated or transferred out, so that gave me a huge opportunity to fill in a role on defense.”
The senior cornerback did not take the leadership role lightly either. The journey to the top and finally landing the starting role on defense was personal for him and he made sure his coaches, teammates, and everyone that was watching last season understood his intentions and motivations to be the best on the field.
“I was always with my defensive backs coach. Working extra and asking questions. I wanted everyone to know I want this and I’m hungry. During my sophomore and junior year, I just wanted the chance, and I never got the opportunity to prove myself and show what I was capable of. Being overlooked, being the last option, it hurt.”
In 2023, Darius was not the last option. He was the option, as he led the team on defense with 5 interceptions and established his presence in the secondary as DD island, spending the remainder of the season stranding wide receivers and forcing opposing coaches to rethink their passing plans.
Heading into the sixth game of the season, Orlando Christian’s opponent The First Academy was coming off a 56-0 blowout where they threw the ball all over the field, but with Richardson in the secondary for Orlando Christian, The First Academy’s passing attack was grounded when he grabbed two interceptions in the first half on route to a 44-24 win for the Warriors.
“At the beginning of the second quarter, I had my first interception of the game. It was a play that I had been going through all week in practice. If you’re a student of the game, plays like that will happen often.”
Darius is undoubtedly a student of the game, but even more importantly, he is a student of God, and his work off the field toward crafting his life into a bridge between faith and football, will be a revelation unto the world when he finishes his work.
“I definitely see myself in the NFL. I also see myself in the ministry as well, and bringing God to that industry. That’s a big platform, and I believe it should be surrounded by God.”
The heart of a warrior emerges through trials and tribulations, and although Richardson’s life has been full of adversity, with the weight of the world on his shoulders, his faith never wavered, and that has created a strong man who is ready to spread his faith to others through the power of positivity.
“My faith, my trust, my belief in God, means absolutely everything to me. There were moments in life when I thought there was no way out, and I can truly say that God revealed himself to me, and he showed love to me. I don’t know where I would be without God right now.”
Not only is Darius striving to be a professional athlete, but he has just as high academic aspirations for his future as he aims to be the first person in his family to graduate college.
“There’s a lot of things that I accomplished this year, but my Dad will say, 'You're doing something that me and your mom never did before.’ It’s shocking to me too, that I’m going to be the first to make that happen.”
Darius Richardson is a motivational leader, and his message to first-generation students, and student-athletes like himself is devout and inspirational, flowing from deep within the heart of the warrior.
“Don’t let anybody doubt you and don’t let anyone come between your vision and your goals, and what God placed on your heart and your mind. It may seem impossible, but I serve a God that does the impossible.”
For Darius does all things through God that gives him strength.
